IEC 62680-1-8 is to describe in detail all the Terminal Typesthat are supported by the Audio Device Class. This document isconsidered an integral part of the Audio Device ClassSpecification, although subsequent revisions of this document areindependent of the revision evolution of the main Audio DeviceClass Specification. This is to easily accommodate the addition ofnew Terminal Types without impeding the core Audio Device ClassSpecification.
The Audio Device Class Definition applies to all devices orfunctions embedded in composite devices. All audio signals insidean audio function start at an Input Terminal, pass through someUnits, and leave the function through an Output Terminal. Units canmanipulate the signal in various ways. Terminals represent theconnections of the function to the outside world.
As part of the Terminal descriptor, the wTerminalType fieldspecifies the vendor suggested use of the Terminal. For example, apair of speakers is a more suitable target for music output than atelephone line. This feature allows a vendor to ensure thatapplications use the device in a consistent and meaningful way.
