Little teapots withlong spouts have become a fixture in many homes to flush outclogged nasal passages and help people breathe easier.

Along with other nasalirrigation devices, these devices — commonly called neti pots— use a saline, or saltwater, solution to treat congested sinuses,colds and allergies. They’re also used to moisten nasal passagesexposed to dry indoor air. But be careful. Improper use of theseneti pots and other nasal irrigation devices can increase yourrisk of infection.

Nasalirrigation devices — which include neti pots, bulb syringes,squeeze bottles, and battery-operated pulsed water devices — areusually safe and effective products when used and cleaned properly,says Eric A. Mann, M.D., Ph.D., a doctor at the FDA.

What doessafe use mean?
First, rinse onlywith distilled, sterile or previously boiled water.

Tap waterisn’t safe for use as a nasal rinse because it’s not ade or treated. Some tap water contains low levels oforganisms — such as bacteria and protozoa, including amoebas — thatmay be safe to swallow because stomach acid kills them. But in yournose, these organisms can stay alive in nasal passages and causepotentially serious infections. They can even be fatal in some rarecases, accordingto the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC).

Distilled or sterilewater, which you can buy in stores. The labelwill state “distilled” or “sterile.”

Boiled and cooled tapwater — boiled for 3 to 5 minutes, then cooleduntil it is lukewarm. Previously boiled watercan be stored in a clean, closed container for use within 24 hours.

“There arevarious ways to deliver saline to the nose. Nasal spray bottlesdeliver a fine mist and might be useful for moisturizing dry nasalpassages. But irrigation devices are better at flushing the noseand clearing out mucus, allergens and bacteria,” Mannsays.

Leaning over a sink, tilt your head sidewayswith your forehead and chin roughly level to avoid liquid flowing into your mouth.

Finally,make sure the device fits the age of the person using it. Somechildren are diagnosed with nasal allergies as early as age 2 andcould use nasal rinsing devices at that time, if a pediatricianrecommends it. But very young children might not tolerate theprocedure.
