The UHFEPCglobal Generation-2 standard allows the commercialized provisionof mass adoptionof UHF RFID technology for passive smart tags and labels. Mainfields ofapplications are supply chain management and logistics forworldwide use with specialconsideration of European, US and Chinese fre to ensurethat operating distances ofseveral meters can be realized. The NXPSemiconductors UCODE product family is compliant to this EPCGen2 standardoffering anti-collision and collision arbitration functionality.This allows a reader tosimultaneously operate multiple labels/tags within its antennafield. TheUCODE-based label/ tag requires no external power supply forcontactless operation. Itscontactless interface generates the power supply via the antennacircuit by propagativeenergy transmission from the interrogator (reader), while thesystem clock is generated byan on-chip oscillator. Data transmitted from the interrogator tothe label/tag is demodulatedby the interface, and it also modulates the interrogator'selectromagnetic field for datatransmission from the label/tag to the interrogator.Alabel/tag can be then operated without the need for line of sightor battery, as long as it is connectedto a dedicated antenna for the targeted frequency range. When thelabel/tag is within theinterrogator's operating range, the high-speed wireless interfaceallows data transmissionin both directions. With the UCODEI2Cproduct, NXP Semiconductors introduces now the possibilityto combine 2independent UHF Interfaces (following EPC Gen2 standard) with anI2Cinterface. Itslarge memory can be then read or write via both interfaces.ThisI2Cfunctionality enables the standard EPC Gen2 functionalities to belinked to an electronicdevice microprocessor.
