An apnea monitor shouldhave:

An example of amethod capable of detecting both and distinguishing between them isrespiratory inductance plethysmography. Combinations of thesemethods can be used to monitor both types of apnea and distinguishbetween them.

The secondary/indirectmethods of detecting apnea measure physiologic parameters thatchange as a result of apnea. For example, apnea may lead tohypoxia, which in turn may lead to bradycardia. Therefore, bothpulse oximetry and heart rate monitoring can be used as secondarydetection methods.
