(Lighted objects)
Background:
Clause 3.2.13 of IEC 60598-1:2020 requires the provision of asymbol for minimum distance from lighted objects on luminaires thatmight overheat those lighted objects due to the applied lamp type, the shape of the reflector, the adjustable mounting means, locationof mounting etc.
As decided and explained in DSH0836: “In case the temperature ofthe lighted object at a distance of 10 cm is less than 90°C, thedistance symbol is not applicable.”
Question:
Is this symbol also necessary for LED industrial high bays, floodlights, or streetlights, where it is obvious from theinstallation instructions that they shall be mounted at areasonable distance from the lighted object?
Answer:
The symbol is not necessary for these cases.
Considering they will not overheat lighted objects due toinstallation height, examples of luminaire types exempted from thisrequirement include:
-Street lanterns
-Floodlights (for wide area lighting)
-High bay and other industrial luminaires intended for high levelinstallation
-Ceiling mounted luminaires with a wide photometric distribution, installed at high level and not be lighting objects as described inClause 3.2.13
Furthermore, luminaires using light sources with a relatively lowsurface temperature or low infrared content (e.g., fluorescentlamps, LED sources) are also considered unlikely to overheat anylighted object.
For other luminaires, temperature measurements made during thermaltesting (e.g., light source surface temperature, diffusertemperature, measurement of luminaire parts within the light path)may also be used to guide that no measurement of the lightedsurface is required.
